Birth control is the way of preventing pregnancy in women by using contraception and fertility control methods. It is a family planning method which uses practices, methods and devices to prevent pregnancy. Birth control is used to prevent fertilization of an egg in the uterus.

Various approaches for birth control:

  • Barrier methods can be condoms, cervical caps, contraceptives sponges. These work by preventing sperm from entering the uterus. This method is used for women who can't take hormonal therapy.
  • Hormonal methods are used for birth control by using pills, injections, skin patches, vaginal rings, intrauterine systems and implantable rods, hormone therapy. Hormonal birth control pills use hormones to stop the release of an egg, which can't fertilize by sperm.
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD's) are used for maintaining birth control for a long time. IUD's uses hormones, which act for 5 years. The copper-T (natural sperm killer) uses copper, which acts for up to 10 years. IUD's are about 99% effective birth control.
  • Emergency contraception is a form of birth control which is used when women have had unprotected physical intercourse or where birth control method have been failed. It is not a regular birth control method and it is suitable for specific situations.

The best birth control method is one which protects from every time intercourse and it depends how well you used birth control methods. The Best method is hormonal pills which contain a small amount of estrogen and progestin. Hormonal contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy by stopping the ovulation and by changing the lining of the womb and making sperm entry unsuitable to egg.
